The indoor air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits inside, typically in a basement, closet, or utility space, and it is the point where conditioned air enters the duct system.

The refrigerant lines run between the two units, connecting the outdoor and indoor sides of the system. A thermostat on an interior wall ties everything together, reading the temperature in the home and telling the system when to run.
